5 Steps to Master Setting Goals & Achieving Them

Any time of year is a good time to set goals, even though setting goals and actually achieving them can be a real struggle. I’ve been there, heck, we’ve all been there. But don’t worry, I’ve got your back! Let me share 5 awesome ways to approach setting goals and making sure you actually achieve them.

Tip #1 Goal size does matter

First things first. Let’s talk about keeping your goals small and measurable. It’s super important to break them down into bite-sized pieces that you can easily conquer. That way, you’ll feel motivated and see progress along the way, no matter how small it may be, it will feel great.  As much as I would like to lose 30 pounds, I know my willpower sucks, and thinking about 30 pounds stops me in my tracks!

Tip #2 Being specific with goals is terrific

Now, let’s get specific! The more detailed and precise your goals are, the better your chances of achieving them. Trust me, vague goals can leave you feeling lost and unfocused. So, break down your big goal into smaller, more specific ones. For example, if you want to shed some pounds, set a goal to lose a pound or two each week or commit to a certain number of exercise days per week.

There is a cafeteria where I work and the portions are quite large, so my small goal is only eating half my lunch one day and the other half the next day. I have also successfully implemented drinking 12 ounces of green tea after lunch, and a smaller one after dinner. I plan to reach 5 cups a day to get the full benefits!

Tip #3 Commit, commit, commit to your goal

Commitment is key! Once you’ve set your goals, it’s time to make a promise to yourself. Write them down, create an action plan, and get ready to work towards them. Remember, it’s a long-term process, so don’t expect overnight success. Just keep pushing forward and never give up!

I always remind myself that it took years to gain the weight and it will take time to lose it and keep it off. I will admit that I’ve not written down my weight loss goal but I will do so tonight and refer to it daily to remind myself what I want to achieve. Have you done that? How about doing it now?

Tip #4 Share your goal without fear

Now, here’s a little secret: sharing your goals with others can be a game-changer. It’s important to share with others who support you or who also want to lose a few pounds.   When you let your friends and family in on your goals, you become more accountable because you put it out there and will more likely work harder towards it. Now, if they truly care about you, they’ll be rooting for your progress, and that extra support can make all the difference. It’s like having your very own cheering squad! Go girl, go!

Tip #5 Set a goal end date

Last but not least, deadlines are your best friend. It’s all well and good to set goals, but if you don’t have a specific deadline in mind, it’s going to be more difficult to achieve them.

Think about it. Without a specific timeframe, it’s easy to procrastinate and let your goals fall by the wayside. It’s easier to put them off and think “I’ll start on them tomorrow”, then before you know it months have passed and you’re no closer to your goals. So, give yourself a deadline for each goal you create. Make sure it’s realistic and personalized to suit each goal.

A season could be a deadline. Lose a certain number of pounds by the start of spring, or by your birthday. Choose a special day, or occasion and get started.

By approaching goal setting in these friendly and relatable ways, you’ll give yourself the best shot at actually achieving them. So, go out there, set those goals, and let’s make your dreams a reality! You’ve got this!
